The birth sweep took place in maternity wards: this was the recruitment phase and the first data collection at child birth. It took place over four waves. 18 319 children were included, including 288 sets of twins. They were all born in 2011, after at least 33 weeks of amenorrhoea.

The two-months sweep is the first that followed families after the maternity ward. Interviewing parents soon after birth was meant to get families to adhere to the survey, and to make the most of the time they had during their maternity or paternity leave.
